Implementation of the Interreg VI-A Lithuania-Poland Programme Strategic Project “Connectivity across Lithuanian – Polish border”
On February 28, 2025, the Subsidy Contract was signed for the implementation of the strategic project No. LTPL00352 „Connectivity across Lithuanian – Polish border“ of the Interreg VI-A Lithuania-Poland Programme for 2021-2027.
The main goal of the project is to improve connectivity between border communities by strengthening cross-border road infrastructure, exchanging experiences, and developing cross-border mobility. Project implementation period – 36 months.
The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Lazdijai District Municipality and partners from Poland (Sejny Poviat and Commune Sejny). During the implementation of the project, on the Lithuanian side, repair works are planned for a 10 km section of the state road No. 2505 Leipalingis–Kapčiamiestis–Kauknoris from Kapčiamiestis to Kauknoris and a 1.33 km section of the local road from Kauknoris to the Polish border. The total reconstructed road section in Lithuania and Poland amounts to 22.25 km.
The total project value is 12,927,343.38 EUR, of which 10,341,874.69 EUR is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The budget of AB “Via Lietuva” for the project is 6,701,851.04 EUR (5,361,480.83 EUR from ERDF funds).
The project is an important factor in promoting social welfare and the development of the border area. The impact of investments in transport infrastructure will increase the competitiveness of the border area and ensure the well-being of the border region’s residents in terms of health, safety, convenience, and social capital growth. Transport infrastructure plays a very important role in border region connections and significantly influences the development of regions, cities, or local areas. Physical access is the third most frequently mentioned barrier (after legal and/or administrative barriers and language) related to border regions, so a well-functioning and well-connected network infrastructure is very important for reducing the isolation of the border region and increasing its competitiveness by promoting trade and development. The implementation of the project in cooperation with Polish partners is an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and experience between neighboring countries, create more competitive and higher-quality cross-border transport connections, and strive for more sustainable regional development in the future.
