Uninterrupted 5G Coverage Across Via Baltica Corridor
Considering that a Grant Agreement No. 101181148 — 23-EU-DIG-5G-BALTICS has been signed between the Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) and the project coordinator TALLINNA TEHNIKAÜLIKOOL (TalTech) for the project “Uninterrupted 5G Coverage Across Via Baltica Corridor” (Project No. 101181148), funded under the digital sector of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), AB “Via Lietuva”, together with project partners UAB “Tele2” and AB “Telia”, has signed a national project implementation agreement with the Central Project Management Agency (CPMA).
The development of 5G networks is a key step in building Europe’s future communication infrastructure and ensuring seamless digital services across borders. This project focuses on deploying advanced 5G infrastructure along Via Baltica – a strategic transport corridor connecting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Given the growing demand for fast and reliable connectivity, the project aims to ensure uninterrupted 5G coverage along the entire 663.2 km corridor. The infrastructure will include both active and passive components, with special attention to cross-border connectivity.
The project includes the following works:
• In Estonia: up to 8 new 5G sites along a 192.2 km stretch.
• In Latvia: 195 km of optical infrastructure and up to 27 new 5G sites covering 203 km.
• In Lithuania: up to 14 radio towers and up to 20 active infrastructure sites along a 268 km section.
These investments will ensure continuous and reliable 5G connectivity throughout the corridor, especially in border areas. The project contributes to the implementation of the EU’s Gigabit Society and Sustainable and Smart Mobility strategies, promoting more advanced, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mobility.
In addition to improving transport efficiency, this project will provide faster and more reliable connectivity for both residents and businesses, fostering innovation, economic growth, and regional cohesion.
According to the Grant Agreement, AB ‘Via Lietuva’ intends to incur expenses of up to €1,970,890, with 50% of the amount to be co-financed by the CEF.
The total value of the project for all partners is €16,574,566.97.
The project started on January 1, 2025, and is scheduled to end on December 31, 2027.
